New @ this site, but long time sky gazer. Can Jupiter be seen in the night sky from Calif. right now. 1/11/09 I see a very bright body to the South, what is that?

Not quite sure, but I don't think you would be able to see it, as it is so very close to the sun at the moment. Waaaay out on the other side of the solar system.
I took a screen shot from stellarium for you, to illustrate where it is right now.

But... how were you turn on the orbits in Stellarium?

Left side of screen there is a configuration button. You can see Jupiter early morning now about 2:30 am and then Venus follows very bright.
