The problem with Nuclear fusion as a fuel source.

Ok, it's a bit of the beaten path of cosmology but bearing in mind all those that think that Fusion will power our space craft, so I think it's important to ask.

Doesn't anyone else think that the race for "fusion power" is a pointless one.

Being realistic, we use fission from minerals pushed together by fusion from our earths core. This involved energy INPUT from geothermal sources and tremendous pressure. The power we then obtain we call nuclear power.

Just common sense compares nuclear power to every other form, well for instance chemical energy. If you can split an element using electricity, it will always take the same energy to form the chemical from its composite parts.

So at what point do the supposed "boffins" think that fusion will actually produce more energy than it consumes when done by our hands?

Personally I am suprised they do not look into the possiblities of artificial geothermal energy (dig a hole dig enough and let it produce steam for steam turbines). Natural geothermal energy already powers iceland and is completely clean!

Just seems like a waste of time really.
