New Type of Variable Star Discovered

Astronomers at McDonald Observatory in Ft. Davis Texas, using the 2.1 metre Otto Struve Telescope, have confirmed existance of a new type of variable star called a pulsating carbon white dwarf.

This new star type was discovered last year by Patrick Dufour and James Liebert from the University of Arizona.

What is this new type of variable star?

This newly discovered pulsating carbon white dwarf has had its hydrogen and helium shells stripped off, exposing its carbon layer. This type of star remnant is too small to ever terminate in a supernova explosion.

Following the newly discovered star type, University of Texas's Michael Montgomery, Kurtis Williams and Steven DeGennaro predicted that pulsations could be a possibility. This was confirmed with DeGennaro's discovery of a pulsating carbon white dwarf star in Ursa Major.
