One may now see Mars around 8pm, and even high in the west early in the morning sky. It rises slightly before and to the left of Betelgeuse.
Mars will be at its closest to Earth on December 18, and will be at its brightest the last half of December. Mars will reach opposition (opposite the Sun from Earth) on December 24 when it rises at sunset and sets at sunrise. What a nice holiday greeting from space!
Even though the red planet won't be as bright as four years ago, stick around until the years 2016, 2018, and 2020. The year 2018 will show us a view of Mars comparable to what we saw in 2003.
Happy Holiday Observing !
