Well according to the Mayan's this will be the last day, period. Can anyone explain why??

According to what I understand from my past studies in archeology, the Mayan culture had a two time keeping systems: the " Short Count " and the " Long Count" . The 260 day Short Count is still being used in the Guatemalan highlands. Both Counts run consistently with each other.
(I could write a whole discourse on the Mayan Calendar, but unfortunately there is no space here for it and there are already a lot of good books on the subject along with online information, I wouldn't want to be redundant!)
For some reason, which is still debated, the Mayan calendar's " last day" was actually the winter solstice in 2012. It is thought that precession of the equinoxes has something to do with that date being chosen.
The tolkin calendar (which originated with the Olmecs) springs from the Sacred Tree with is an extension of Lord Pacal's (Ahau) umbilicus. The Sacred Tree is the point where the Milky Way and the ecliptic cross. Ahau is related to the Sun King.
In the predawn sky, he is able to jump from the ecliptic to the Milky Way track and travel to Polaris which at that time was not the pole star but the unmarked dark region and door into the underworld. Remember that the Mayans believed that all life revolved around death. Anyway, there is a lot more involved in this story, but bottom line is: the Winter Solstice on 2014 conjuncts the Sacred Tree.
