Arkaroola Star Party
DownUnder 2008

10th - 13th of January 2008
Arakaroola Wilderness Sanctuary
Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Following the successes of our Star Party DownUnder in 2006 & 2007,
Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and the Astronomical Society of South
Australia are pleased to announce preliminary details for Star Party
DownUnder 2008. Observe the spectacular southern hemisphere skies from
Australia’s
outback. Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary is situated in the majestic
Flinders Ranges, 600 kilometres north of Adelaide, South Australia. It
has it all. Beautiful landscapes during the day, and skies at night that
make you want to reach up and touch the stars. By day, relax in your
air-conditioned room, make new friends in the bar or cool off by the
swimming pool. In the evening, observe the night sky
under ideal conditions— mild temperatures, perfect seeing, and no light
pollution. The nearest township is over 130 kilometres away to the west.
All lighting during the Star Party Downunder will be strictly controlled
so that your observing experience will be the best it can possibly be.

Simply put, every serious astronomer MUST spend at least several weeks
observing f r o m t h e S o u t h e r n Hemisphere. Although only a
small fraction of the sky is not visible from mid-northern latitudes,
most of the sky we can't see contains the "best in class" of almost
every object type.”
- Albert Highe, well known Californian amateur astronomer during a visit
to Arkaroola in April 2005
