Phoenix- Mars Mission Launches August 4, 2007

After a day's delay, the Phoenix Mars Lander is scheduled to launch before sunrise tomorrow. The Phoenix is the first Marcian mission to "Follow the Water" and to analyze soil and ice samples from the Martian arctic region.

The four goals of NASA's Mars Exploration Program are:
1- To determine if there was ever life on the red planet
2- To characterize the marcian climate
3- To characterize marcian geology
4- To prepare for human exploration.
The Phoenix Mission supports two of these goals by studying the history of possible availability of water in the arctic and searching for a future habitable zone while assessing "the biological potential of the ice-soil boundary".
