This news comes from amateur astronomer Jim Melka of St. Louis, Missouri who has spotted "a growing dust event" near the historically active south polar cap in an area called the Noachis region. The great dust storms of 1956 and 1971 started near this area and scientists remind us that as Mars nears perihelion and the surface heats up convection currents tend to form increasing surface wind speeds lifting large volumes of dust into the Marcian atmosphere.
