Lyrids!

Let's all hope for clear dark skies tonight for the Lyrid Meteor Shower.

The following message was sent through the listserver by Mr. Brian Cudnik of H.A.S.

....................

The Lyrid meteor shower is active this weekend, peeking on April 22 at 18:04UT. The maximum ZHR is 18 and the impact velocities are 49 km/sec.

Observers are encouraged to monitor the earth-lit portion of the crescent moon, especially the northern half away from the brilliant crescent, each evening up through First Quarter moon on 24 April. Observations are especially encouraged within 24 hours of ZHR peak, that is between 18h on April 21 and 18h on April 23.

If the weather permits (and it has not lately), I plan to video between 2h and 4h UT on 21 April (or April 20th--this evening--local time). I plan to videotape the moon again from 1:30 to 4:30UT, 22 April, and 1:30 to 5:00UT, 23 April. Again this is highly depending on weather which at this point is forecast to be "partly cloudy"; the weather discussion on the web page of the National Weather Service mentions that mid-high clouds are likely to thicken starting tomorrow. Clear Sky Clock indicates fairly favorable conditions tonight and tomorrow night, however.

Thanks for all your efforts...Brian Cudnik
