The Anomalous Arms of M106 (NGC 4258)

M106, in Canes Venatici, is one of my favorite galaxies.
Close investigation of M106 reveals " two prominent arms emanating from its nucleus and spiraling outward".

But it seems that radio and X-ray images have determined another two spiral arms consisting of gaseous regions "that are being violently heated by shock waves from a pair of jets of particles originating at the galaxy's core".
More information on these findings will be revealed in the Astrophysical Journal's May issue, of research carried out by Yuxuan Yang.

Read more about this in an interesting article written by Robin Lloyd
