Looking to purchase telescope

Can anyone please help me?! I am looking to purchase a telescope for my father for xmas, but know relatively nothing about telescopes or the power of each, or what can be seen with each size lens or focal length. Please help.

Buying your first scope really takes a lot of thought.
Do you belong to an astronomy club? The local members would be glad to help you and your dad chose the best one for your needs.
I would recommend joining an astronomy club and spending time at star parties and meetings, first.
And a club membership would make a great holiday gift.
I would also recommend investing in a good pair of binoculars before purchasing a telescope.
After much thought and advise gathering, you may want to invest in a DOBSONIAN. There are DOBSONIAN GO TOs now, I believe.
