I would say that he was brilliant insofar as he managed to get others to dream ...
He did contribute an awful lot to the less glamorous un-manned space missions.

I would also say he brought space closer to earthlings with his presentations and books. He made us think, contemplate, read and study his dreams and so we embraced them, redrempt them and made them our own.
