SOLAR ECLIPSE VISIBLE OVER EUROPE

Got those solar filters ready?

Space Weather News for March 28, 2006
http://spaceweather.com

Parts of Brazil, Africa, Turkey, central Asia and Mongolia: These are places where people can see a total eclipse of the sun on Wednesday, March 29th. A partial eclipse will be visible over a much wider area, including all of Europe. Astronauts onboard the International Space Station will have the rarest view of all. The station is due to pass over Turkey while the eclipse is in progress there, giving astronauts a magnificent view—not of the sun, but of the moon's cool shadow.

Visit spaceweather.com for full coverage, including an animated eclipse map, links to live webcasts, and a simulated view from the International Space Station.

The Sun is due to be a bit less than 20% covered where I am. Still, it's a good excuse to dust off the solar filter!

Anyone wish to comment on personal experience viewing this eclipse?

View from Ireland

I setup my 20cm SCT earlier today for the eclipse. The weather is great: it's a bright spring day here in Ireland!

I used a focal reducer and a wide angle eyepiece (20mm focal length) to get a good view of the Sun which was about 10% - 20% covered (saw a few sunspots too!).

As I was in a bit of a rush to setup the 'scope and didn't have any solar filter for my telescope's viewfinder which was kind of annoying but finding the Sun wasn't too much of a hassle.

In the end I stayed out for about an hour, made a few sketches and showed some people the eclipse.

It would be great to see any photographs of the eclipse (especially anyone who was lucky enough to get to a region of totality) and we could of course uload them to our imaging page: http://www.astronomytoday.com/imaging.html
