An annular eclipse is a well-known type of solar eclipse where a small rim of the sun is visible all the way around the occluding moon. The name of the eclipse comes from the meaning of the Latin word annulus, meaning ring (or possibly circular opening).

This type of eclipse happens when the moon is at or near its farthest orbital distance from the Earth during the moments of the eclipse.

In addition to what Andrew said, the annular eclipse occurs when the earth is in the antumbra shadow of the moon (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbra for example).

@Loveth15: look at http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse.html for past and future schedules of the eclipses.
