weird star

There's a star I've been watching, and for all my looking up I can't find out what it is. This is driving me crazy. Can anyone tell me? I'm in the (very)Northwestern US, and the star appears to the northeast (slightly) of sunrise. It's viewable all night, and turns brilliant colors, relatively slowly. At first, I thought it was a distant airplane. :)
I noticed it about a month ago. I've had an astronomy student point out Venus to me, thinking it may have been, but this wasn't it. (Of course, they may have been wrong, but probably know a good deal more than I about such things.)
Can anyone throw me a bone? Thanks!
