What will happen in 2012??

According to NASA scientists, "nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012." The scientists wrote on the page that "our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012."
But it's further down on the page where the scientists bring out the big guns. They said although the myth surrounding 2012 contends planets will align and crash into Earth, "there are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence."
In the end, it was a simple comment from NASA senior research scientist Don Yeomans that might sum up the agency's feelings on 2012: "There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV, and the movies is not based on science."

I'd be worrying more about terrorism and global warming.

I totally agree with Lydia. We'd better concern more about the global warming, about how to improve it.

I thought this was an astronomy forum, not a fantasy forum.

The movie 2012 was based on a prediction by psychics and not based on science. From what the NASA scientists were saying, there will be no catastrophic thing that will happen in 2012. What we may worry more as what the comments had said is the global warming thing. It is very evident on our weather that definitely the planet is changing in terms of its weather condition. Summer are hotter now than before. More natural disasters are happening around the globe.

If you consider the recent scenario then its sure that there is going to be something worst in 2012.
As global warming has increased, ozone layer is getting diminished, plants and trees are cut down for civilizations, countries are having internal problems, terrorists and crime are common factors..
This is sure that with the mixture of natural calamities and country wars, 2012 is going to be worst year ever and maybe end of Earth..

I don't think anything wrong will happen in 2012. It is just a media hype and some unscientific talk. It is just ridiculous.

Many people believe that the world will end because the mayans predicted it. But there is no confirmation that it was a prediction. The mayan calender ended just after the mayans disapeared. So there is no proof that the world will end in 2010, just some hollywood directors using paranoia to make money. And some think that it will end because the planets will align or something. But the planets have aligned before and well.....the Earth is still here. So I do not believe the Earth will definently end in 2010. But I think it is possoble, because the Apocolypse can begin at any time (I believe this because I am a Christian).[/u]

I wouldn't put to much faith in a civilization that has been extinct. We have modern technology today that far exceed any Mayan technology or star chart. The Mayan calendar so called ends in 2012 only based on interpretation. People have been calling for the end of the world for centuries. I bet the Mayans thought the world would end back in there day. Most ancient civilizations had a fear of some sort of Armageddon. When the world does extinguish either from the sun expanding in the next 6 billion years or a rogue comet in 10 years. No one can predict the end. There are to many variables for, especially for a calender that is made by a group of people that thought the sun needed human sacrifice to rise.
