Energy is sent out across distance all the time.

Radio waves and the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum are all forms of energy sent over distance. Light, heat, microwaves, x-rays, gamma rays, sound energy, gravity, all forms of energy that can travel and be sent and received to and from distance.

Here's one great example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_coil
