The goal of ARES I-X is to test a rocket design which will enable a manned vehicle to launch in a range of weather and wind conditions. More than 700 sensors will be relaying useful data, including sound waves generated by the motor as well as behavior of the stack in wind speed and direction.
Update 28 October, 2009 1028 a.m : GO FOR LAUNCH ! Looks like the cameras failed after separation however Upper Stage water impact was confirmed and parachutes deployed as planned.
Update 28 October, 2009 1005 a.m. : Well, we have another weather delay. Launch has now been moved to 1026. CDT. The launch window has been approved through noon.
Update 28 October, 2009 956 CDT: New launch time: 1008 a.m. CDT. Status GO at this time. Weather is important with this launch since any encounter with precipitation may increase the chance of a static charge and so causing communications problems with Control and the multiple onboard sensors. At 130,000 feet the solid-fuel motor will separate and the rocket will then be carried a further distance of 20,000 feet. Parachutes will carry the solid-fuel motor to the ocean where it will be retrieved. The second stage will not be retrieved.
Update 28 October , 2009 900a.m. CDT: News from Complex 39 and launch capability: Mother Nature has the last word, as always, however at this time launch has been pushed to 1000 a.m. CDT, bordering on the latest launch window.
Update 28 October, 2009 756 CDT: ARES 1- X Launch window today is through 1100 CDT. The launch is still pending weather.
Update 1010 CDT: ARES I-X was ready for launch when a seafaring vessel moved into the area. Lauch was delayed for 90 minutes. A weather balloon was released to determine conditions when clouds threatened to complicate the situation. Range weather was determined “green”, wind was determined “red” and a small rain shower restricted conditions a bit more. Launch was then scrubbed for today. Information on tomorrow’s launch pending decisions by Test Director.
